Louis Saha raises Thomas Frank question but says he ‘loves’ two Tottenham stars
Debate around Thomas Frank’s suitability as Tottenham head coach continues to rumble on, and a former Spurs striker has now offered his perspective on whether the club are right to persist with the Dane.
Talk of a managerial change has once again surfaced around Tottenham Hotspur, despite the club only just signing Thomas Frank last summer.
It is no surprise, as results on the pitch have not improved, with Frank posting the worst points per game of Spurs managers in recent times.
Fans have made their feelings about the Dane very clear, with chants calling for his dismissal ringing out at both home and away matches this season.
Louis Saha on Thomas Frank and Tottenham
Regardless, the Tottenham hierarchy has stuck with Frank, but former Tottenham Hotspur and France striker Louis Saha has now given his view on whether the Dane is the right man for the Spurs job.
Speaking to Gambling.com, Saha reflected on the difficulty of the role at Tottenham and the demands placed on any manager tasked with balancing style, structure and results.
The forward believes that Spurs’ struggles are down to two things – recruitment and the lack of an elite forward.
He said: “Yeah, I think it is a difficult one because you see how difficult this position as a manager for Tottenham is, it is extremely complex. They want to play a certain style. They have a new stadium. They have a new infrastructure as an international brand.
“But at the same time, when they bring someone who can bring a bit of foundation, they need the results straight away. In my opinion, they have not purchased the right players. They want to play attacking football, but they play with two sitting midfielders with very similar profiles.
“Good players, but not in a way that you will have maybe a dominance in midfield. So there are many kinds of choices that they have to make.
“So yes, Thomas Frank has ideas to build a foundation to be difficult to beat. But at the same time, result wise, if you do not have the right structure, where strikers can convert those opportunities that you get with a more defensive mindset, it is extremely demanding.
“This is okay, it is good if you have a Harry Kane that converts pretty much like 70% to 80% of his chances and you are very hard to defend, to play against. That makes sense.
“I do not think that is the case at the moment. So they have a great defence. I love their captain, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but in so many ways, they are not as clinical in front of goal.”
Frank is getting it wrong both in attack and defence at Spurs
It is clear that Thomas Frank is looking to be more solid at the back; however, the numbers do not necessarily favour Tottenham in that regard.
In the Premier League this season, Spurs have scored 33 goals and have gone on to concede a worrying 31 in return, the ninth highest in the division.
That is far from a solid base defensively and underlines the struggles of the Dane, who appears to be getting it wrong at both ends of the pitch.
Despite those issues, he continues to bide his time in the dugout, but with fixtures against several of the league’s heavyweights still to come, the outlook could yet deteriorate further for Tottenham.
