Red Sox Predicted To Sign Veteran Slugger Coming Off Monster Season
The Boston Red Sox lost Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs this offseason and could be in the market for an infielder.
The Red Sox have been linked to Isaac Paredes and Brendan Donovan on the trade market, but there is also a name to watch on the free agent market. Eugenio Suárez remains unsigned after a 49-homer season.
Suárez could slot in at third base to replace Bregman, allowing Marcelo Mayer to play second base. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo predicted that the Red Sox would end up signing Suárez before opening day.
Suárez earned his second career All-Star selection last season. He was the most coveted player at the trade deadline last year and was dealt from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners went all the way to the American League Championship Series, but Suárez did not hit well for them. He hit just .189 with a .682 OPS in 53 regular-season games for the Mariners.
He did hit three postseason home runs, but overall, he played much better in Arizona. He had 36 home runs in 106 games for the Diamondbacks last season. He finished the year with a .228/.298/.526 slash line.
His numbers took a hit when he got to the pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park, but he is still a great power hitter. He has 79 home runs in the last two seasons. The 34-year-old slugger is going into his 13th season and could sign on a shorter deal. Perhaps a one or two-year commitment from the Red Sox gets the job done.
