Red Sox Rumors: Club Was ‘Closely Monitoring’ This Reunion
The Boston Red Sox know they need to add an infielder, and it would appear they’re currently in the process of deciding which one they’re going to ultimately make a move for.
Yoán Moncada reportedly re-signed with the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, though his decision to stay put didn’t come without interest from other organizations…
The Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays were the three teams most closely monitoring the veteran infielder’s market who ultimately didn’t get a deal done, according to Francys Romero.
Moncada, 30, made his name as a prospect with Boston, ultimately making his debut with the organization before being traded to the Chicago White Sox — where he had an up-and-down tenure that included seasons where he slashed .315/.367/.548 (2019) and .212/.273/.353 (2022). The Angels have now brought him aboard on consecutive one-year deals, with the hope that he can tap back into the potential that once made him the top prospect in baseball.
Boston has now been tied to numerous infielders, with Moncada being the latest in a string that includes Alex Bregman (Chicago Cubs), Bo Bichette (New York Mets), Isaac Paredes (Houston Astros), Brendan Donovan (St. Louis Cardinals) and Nico Hoerner (Cubs) — with the latter three thought to be available via trade.
Will they ever make a move, though?
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made it seem like they would during Ranger Suárez’s introductory press conference on Wednesday.
“We tend to get caught up in the pitching portion of run prevention, but there are other key components as well — defense being the most obvious,” Breslow said, as seen on NESN. “It’s really important that we improve our defense, particularly our infield defense. I’d argue that we have the best defensive outfield in baseball, but we led the league in errors last year and our out conversion needs to be improved. We’ve done things internally to re-prioritize that, but any additions we may make will be mindful of the defensive skillset.”
It’ll remain to be seen whether those words lead to anything…
