Tottenham Hotspur were about to earn £8.5m but now they have a big problem

0 35

Tottenham Hotspur have run into an unexpected complication regarding the sale of Alejo Veliz after agreeing to sell the striker.

Many Spurs fans may have even forgotten that Veliz is still contracted to the North London club after the striker was loaned back to Rosaria Central in the summer.

After the striker netted five times in 16 league appearances for Rosario, it was reported that Tottenham could recall the youngster and sell him on for a profit.

It subsequently emerged that Spurs accepted an £8.7m bid for Veliz from Brazilian side Bahia, but the move is not straightforward, according to the latest updates from Argentina.

Tottenham cannot cut short Alejo Veliz’s loan spell at Rosario Central

Argentine journalist Enrique Genovar has now explained that Tottenham are not contractually allowed to recall Veliz in January.

He explains that a clause in the striker’s contract only allows Spurs to recall him if he has played less than 50 per cent of Rosario’s games, but the youngster has played more than that, which means the clause is not valid.

This is backed up by another local journalist, Guillermo Ferretti, who says that even though Tottenham have accepted Bahia’s offer for Veliz, the Lilywhites cannot cut short his spell.

Under the current agreement, the centre-forward is expected to remain with the Argentine club until June 30th.

Spurs would have to compensate Rosario to sell Veliz

Meanwhile, another report in the newspaper El Ciudadano explained the Veliz situation in broader detail.

It is asserted that, as things stand, Spurs need Rosario’s approval for the 22-year-old’s move to Bahia to go through this month.

It is revealed that if Veliz decides he wants to join the Brazilian club right now, Tottenham would have to pay financial compensation to Rosario for cutting short the loan earlier than expected.

In other words, a portion of the £8.5m that Spurs are set to receive from Bahia would have to go to Rosario, with the Primera Division and Premier League side needing to settle on an agreement.
