Tottenham hire recently-sacked manager as Thomas Frank’s new assistant coach
Tottenham Hotspur have added an exciting, young coach, who has already served as a manager, to Thomas Frank’s staff.
Matt Wells left his role as first-team assistant coach at Tottenham last month to take over as the head coach of Colorado Rapids.
Thomas Frank made it clear that Tottenham are looking to replace Wells, and it has not taken long for the club to do that.
Interestingly, the Lilywhites have now appointed a man who was in charge of one of Europe’s most successful clubs until a couple of months ago.
Tottenham appoint John Heitinga to Thomas Frank’s staff
Tottenham have now confirmed that John Heitinga has joined Frank’s staff as the new Spurs first-team assistant coach.
The Dutchman had a very successful career at the highest level, featuring for the likes of Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Everton and Fulham, while also being capped 87 times for the Netherlands.
After hanging up his boots in 2016, Heitinga had spells as assistant coach at West Ham and Liverpool, being part of Arne Slot’s staff who led the Reds to the title last term.
The 42-year-old subsequently stepped into the top job, being appointed as Ajax’s head coach in the summer, but his spell only lasted a few months, with Heitinga leaving the Eredivisie giants in November.
Thomas Frank reveals John Heitinga’s role at Spurs
Frank admitted that he is over the moon to have the former Netherlands international at Hotspur Way, backing Heitinga to add a lot of value to the club.
The Dane revealed that the newcomer will primarily be responsible for working with the Tottenham defence.
Frank said about Heitinga’s appointment: “John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch. He had an impressive playing career across Europe – including five years in the Premier League – and with the Dutch national team.
“As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward.”
