Giants Pursuing Two Infielders, Including Red Sox Target
In late December, a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon suggested that the Boston Red Sox were talking to the St. Louis Cardinals about All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan.
Is Boston still interested in Donovan, especially now with Alex Bregman signed to the Chicago Cubs? It’s tough to know for certain, but other teams are surely in on Donovan, and a new post from ESPN’s Jeff Passan confirmed one of them.
According to Passan, the San Francisco Giants are “aggressively pursuing” both Donovan and Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner as San Fran looks to add an impact second baseman.
In 2025, Hoerner — a two-time Gold Glover — hit .297 with seven home runs, 61 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases across 156 games. He led all second basemen with 17 Defensive Runs Saved, and his 6.2 WAR marked a career high.
Donovan, despite injuries limiting him to 118 games, hit .287 with 10 homers, 50 RBIs, and a .775 OPS. As the Cardinals’ lone All-Star, he battled a foot issue and groin strain, ending with hernia surgery, but still posted 2.7 WAR.
The Giants finished 81-81 in 2025 and missed the postseason.
