Tottenham leave Barcelona gutted after repeating Lucas Bergvall transfer trick again
Tottenham Hotspur left Barcelona feeling blue after swooping for Lucas Bergvall, and now they have done it all over again.
According to reports, Spurs have struck a £13m agreement to sign Souza from Santos, with the left-back expected to arrive through the door at Hotspur Way soon.
The 19-year-old had a breakthrough season in the Brazilian top-flight in 2025, playing a key role in helping Santos steer clear of relegation.
It was previously reported that Chelsea also showed an interest in Souza, and it has now emerged that the Blues are not the only club that the Lilywhites beat to the teenager’s signing.
Barcelona accept defeat to Tottenham in Souza transfer race
According to a report in Sport, Barcelona also showed a keen interest in the left-back. The club’s sporting director, Deco, had identified Souza as a target for next season. Santos still owe €2.3m (£2m) to Barcelona over a dispute related to Neymar’s transfer to the Camp Nou in 2013.
The Catalan club were hoping to take advantage of that and sign Santos at a discount, but they have now accepted defeat in the transfer race as they expect the youngster to join Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been reported that Barcelona are still gutted about losing out on Lucas Bergvall to Tottenham, and it appears Spurs have repeated the trick once again.
Spurs also beat Bayern Munich to Souza’s signature
Interestingly, the report mentions that the Santos starlet was also on Bayern Munich’s shortlist for January.
The Bavarian side reportedly sent a scout to Brazil to run the rule over Souza, while the left-back was also contacted by some Serie A clubs.
However, it is asserted that the player is now ‘on the verge of signing’ for the Lilywhites and is just ‘one step away’ from the transfer, with the final paperwork now being finalised.
