Tottenham hit with blow after senior player is ruled out of Aston Villa FA Cup tie

0 14

Tottenham Hotspur have now received a verdict from the FA following their charge against Cristian Romero after his sending off against Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur have been anxiously waiting for the Football Association’s verdict on Cristian Romero following his sending off in the defeat against Liverpool, where he was shown two yellow cards.

It was alleged that the Spurs captain’s reaction after being dismissed meant he could miss further matches, depending on the FA’s ruling, after he was charged for failing to promptly leave the field of play and for confronting the referee.

Thomas Frank had confirmed Tottenham appealed against the decision, and the verdict has now arrived.

Cristian Romero’s suspension is a blow for Tottenham

According to the Football Association, Romero has now been sanctioned in relation to his sending off against Liverpool back on December 20.

This sanction has been imposed because of the Tottenham captain’s failure to leave the field of play promptly and his confrontational or aggressive behaviour towards the referee.

The Argentine has admitted the charge, with an independent regulatory commission imposing a one-match suspension alongside a £50,000 fine.

A statement on X confirming Romero’s suspension read: “Cristian Romero has been sanctioned in relation to the Premier League fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on Saturday 20 December 2025. It was alleged that he acted improperly around the 93rd minute by failing to leave the field of play promptly and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the referee. The defender subsequently admitted the charge, and an independent Regulatory Commission has now imposed a one-match suspension and £50,000 fine after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course.”

Spurs forced into defensive change for Aston Villa clash

This ruling means Romero will miss Tottenham’s FA Cup tie against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Thomas Frank will now have to shuffle his pack, with Kevin Danso expected to step in for Romero as Spurs look to get the better of Unai Emery’s side.

The Tottenham captain should, however, return to action in the Premier League on January 17, when Spurs take on London rivals West Ham United.
