One Man Utd star faces late fitness test today, may not be available vs Burnley

0 12

Manchester United head to Turf Moor later today, looking to steady the ship against Burnley in a crucial Premier League clash.

All eyes will be on Darren Fletcher, who steps into the spotlight on the touchline after INEOS made the ruthless decision to sack Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.

One of the major talking points ahead of kick-off was the fitness of Kobbie Mainoo, a player whose absence has been keenly felt.

The talented midfielder has been sidelined since last month after picking up a calf issue during training.

Addressing the situation, Fletcher confirmed that Mainoo will face a late fitness test before a final decision is made.

He revealed (via ManUtd.com): “Kobbie actually did a part of the session today, but he’s going to have to be assessed tomorrow (today). So that was part of the plan, he’ll be assessed tomorrow.”

The interim head coach also revealed that Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount will be part of the matchday squad.

However, their involvement is expected to be carefully managed, with both players likely limited to short cameo appearances after recent injury layoffs.

Mainoo could be poised for increased responsibility under Fletcher, who is expected to move away from Amorim’s rigid 3-4-3 system.

The 41-year-old has typically favoured a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 during his time with the Under-18s, systems that naturally demand greater midfield control.

A similar tactical shift at senior level would open the door for an additional midfielder in the starting XI.

Remarkably, the academy graduate has yet to start a Premier League game this season after being repeatedly overlooked by Amorim.

The England international now faces a defining six-month period to impress Thomas Tuchel and earn a place in the World Cup squad.
