Tottenham are guaranteed to welcome AFCON midfielder back next week
Tottenham Hotspur are well-represented in the quarter-finals of the AFCON, and it could play into Thomas Frank’s hands come next week.
Apart from the injuries that Thomas Frank is dealing with at the moment, he is also missing two players due to the African Cup of Nations.
While the Danish coach would have been relieved that he could still call on Mohammed Kudus, with Ghana failing to qualify for the AFCON, but the winger picked up an injury against Sunderland.
Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr are currently at the tournament, and the pair will not be back for at least one more week as both Mali and Senegal have now reached the quarterfinals.
Yves Bissouma sets up an all-Tottenham AFCON quarterfinal
The Tottenham star played no part in Mali’s tournament opener against Zambia, but he has started all three of the nation’s subsequent matches in the tournament.
Bissouma played 120 minutes in the round of 16 clash against Tunisia on Saturday and delivered a real captain’s performance in the middle of the park as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The 29-year-old was deemed the Man of the Match by One Football, but he failed to convert his spotkick in the penalty shootout after stepping up first for his side.
However, that did not cost Mali, who emerged 3-2 winners on penalties to seal their place in the final eight.
Pape Sarr continues to watch on from the sidelines for Senegal
Sarr has only started one game for Senegal in the tournament – their third group stage game against Benin, where manager Pape Thiaw rotated his side a bit.
The Tottenham Hotspur man was once again an unused substitute in the round of 16 clash against Sudan, just as he was for the first two group stage matches.
Senegal emerged 3-1 winners on Saturday to set up a quarterfinal clash against Mali on Friday. That means that if Sarr gets the nod to start, he will square up directly against his Spurs teammate Bissouma.
