Fans will be delighted: Man United midfielder set to return from injury before January end
Manchester United are poised to receive a timely fitness boost as the season enters a decisive phase.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Toby Collyer is set to be fit before the end of January.
The 21-year-old suffered a calf injury in November during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion.
He had joined the Baggies on a season-long loan, but that move has now been officially cut short.
It has been a nightmare spell for the former Brighton & Hove Albion starlet, who played for just 253 minutes across 12 appearances for the Championship outfit.
The report also claims United have ruled out sending Collyer on another loan this season.
A series of untimely injury setbacks prevented him from ever finding any rhythm or confidence at The Hawthorns.
Collyer made his United debut under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.
At one stage, he was even viewed as being ahead of Casemiro in the pecking order after Ruben Amorim took charge.
A loan exit was deemed sensible at the time, particularly with United lacking European fixtures to rotate the squad.
Collyer will now have the chance to impress Amorim in the coming five months.
A major midfield revamp is set to take place at United next summer.
Casemiro’s contract expires in June, and the club are unlikely to activate the one-year extension clause.
Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte also face uncertain futures amid questions over their long-term roles.
Even captain Bruno Fernandes could be tempted by interest from Saudi Arabia.
Collyer is a solid midfielder who can press with intensity and recycle possession.
Comfortable in possession and tidy in distribution, he keeps the game ticking over.
With the right guidance, Collyer could yet be moulded into a long-term holding midfielder for United.
