Five losers as 'boring boring' Tottenham draw 0-0 with Brentford in the Premier League - Opinion
Tottenham Hotspur picked up a point against Brentford in the Premier League, but their lethargic performance failed to inspire.
Tottenham Hotspur have kept a second consecutive clean sheet in the Premier League, but sealng a victory on Thursday night was too much to ask this time around.
There are very few positives to take from the display if truth be told, so let’s take a look at the five losers from a new year’s day fixture to forget.
Thomas Frank is out of ideas at Tottenham
Boring, boring Tottenham was the song raised by the travelling Spurs fans and who could possibly blame them?
Thomas Frank has destroyed any creativity this squad had and it is no wonder he was booed when he approached them after the game.
Tottenham ought to be on the frontfoot, giving Brentford something to worry about, but the opportunities crafted were few and far between. Frank is a man without a plan and there are no signs this will change.
Luca Williams-Barnett was left out of the Spurs squad
Luca Williams-Barnett has only just returned from injury, but he would have been hoping to at least get a look-in against Brentford.
Instead, Frank opted to select two goalkeepers on his bench, while the teenager was left out of the matchday squad entirely.
This would have been a great game for Williams-Barnett to get some minutes, with Tottenham’s usual attacking midfield options all unavailable. His now deleted Instagram story clearly shows that there is frustration with his exclusion from Thursday’s London derby.
Guglielmo Vicario did something embarrassing for Tottenham
Guglielmo Vicario made a couple of decent saves against Brentford and he will likely be pleased to have recorded a second successive clean sheet.
However, the Italian was shown a yellow card in the second half because of how long he took to take a goal kick.
It is nothing short of embarrassing to be punished for time wasting when the scoreboard reads 0-0 and the opposing team are not even that good. Spurs should have been playing quickly in order to find a winning goal.
Wilson Odobert did not take his chance in the Tottenham team
There has been a lot of talk about Wilson Odobert in the past day or two and he earned his start on Thursday after a good display off the bench against Crystal Palace.
Sadly the Frenchman did nothing to make Spurs look dangerous in attack against Brentford and he was eventually replaced by Randal Kolo Muani.
Odobert is a player who has shown moments when it looks like there is something there, but he is not at the level yet where he should be a regular starter at Tottenham. The fact he often finds himself in the first-team says a lot about the state of the Spurs first-team squad.
Mohammed Kudus did nothing for Spurs
Usually Mohammed Kudus does well at protecting the ball, but he looked so easy to dispossess against Brentford.
The 25-year-old lost 10 duels, which was more than any other player on the pitch and his attacking contributions were just as poor.
Brennan Johnson might not be the long-term answer to Tottenham’s problems, but selling him gives Kudus a pass to do nothing and still start the next game. The lack of competition on the right wing is a concern and the sooner Dejan Kulusevski returns, the better.
