Wimborne Town 0-2 Poole Town – Match Report
Shaquille Gwengwe’s brace was enough for Poole Town to return to winning ways in the Stourco Derby after a convincing 2-0 win over Wimborne Town.
The highly anticipated match between the Dolphins and the Magpies was witnessed by a record crowd of 2,500 at The Wyatt Homes Stadium.
Joe Lea and Pat Suraci made one change from the defeat to Sholing with the injured Corey Jordan being replaced by Ade Olumuyiwa who made his first start since returning to the club.
Wimborne manager Tim Sills made three changes coming off the back of the 4-0 defeat to Havant & Waterlooville with Will Fletcher, Max Bustamente and Cam Munn all coming into the team.
The match got underway with both sides holding their shape well in the early stages and neither side able to generate a clear-cut chance.
Olumuyiwa was shown an early yellow card after 13 minutes for a late challenge on Bustamente just outside the area, the resulting Wimborne free kick was fired straight into the wall.
Sam Jackson went closest in the first half for the Magpies; his volleyed effort was well dealt with by Adam Parkes in the Poole goal.
The first chance for Joe and Pat’s side fell the way of Kris Campbell after great work from Billy Lowes down the left flank, however he was unable to keep his shot on target.
The Dolphins went close again on the 25th minute through Gwengwe from close range, but he blazed his effort over the bar as the score remained goalless.
Just a few moments later, Gwengwe was brought down inside the area, and the referee had no option but to point to the spot.
It was Poole’s number nine who stepped up and as he normally does, converted past Bastian Smith to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead on the 30th minute mark.
As the half drifted to a close, the Magpies pushed in search of an equaliser, but the referee’s whistle brought it to a close with Poole in the commanding position.
Joe and Pat were forced into a half time substitution with Ik Hill replacing Selim Saied and Ayo was substituted just a few minutes after the restart for Charlie Davis.
Despite Wimborne’s efforts to find the next goal in this game, it was the Dolphins who doubled their lead in this one after some brilliant build up, it fell to Gwengwe who was in the right place at the right time to smash it home and make it 2-0 on the 63rd minute.
The Magpies thought they’d found a way back into the match through substitute Joe Ryan, but he could only fire over the bar with ten minutes to play.
Ajani Burchall’s effort stinged the hands of Adam Parkes, but time was running out for the hosts with Poole seemingly taking all the points.
The full-time whistle was blown and the bragging rights fell the way of the Dolphins with Gwengwe’s brace enough for all three points in the Stourco Derby infront of a packed out Wyatt Homes Stadium confirming that Dorset is indeed red and white!
Next up for Poole is a return to Tatnam as we host Plymouth Parkway, it would be fantastic to see as many of you there as possible!
Up The Dolf!
