Red Sox Predicted To Sign Veteran Southpaw To Bolster Bullpen
The Boston Red Sox have been very busy this offseason, but have mainly been working in the trade market.
With plenty of star free agents still available, the Red Sox could start looking to fill out their remaining needs. The Red Sox’s biggest need may be for another impact bat, and Craig Breslow has reportedly made that a priority. However, they could also use a little more help in the bullpen. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman predicted the Red Sox would sign Danny Coulombe.
The Red Sox need a southpaw in the bullpen, and Coulombe is a great option. Some of the Red Sox’s excess starting pitchers could find themselves in the bullpen, but Coulombe is a veteran coming off a solid season.
Coulombe had a 2.30 ERA in 55 games between the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers. In 40 games with the Twins, he had a 1.16 ERA. He did not play so well with the Rangers, but he can still be an effective reliever.
He dealt with injuries in 2024, playing just 33 games, but he has been solid the last three seasons. Since 2023, he has had a 2.47 ERA in 149 games. Adding him to a right-heavy bullpen could be great for the Red Sox.
Boston already has Aroldis Chapman, but they need a left-handed option who can be deployed before the ninth inning. Coulombe would give them that option, and he may not be overly expensive.
Coulombe has a 3.35 ERA and 312 strikeouts in his 11-year career. He does not have much postseason experience, pitching only 1 2/3 innings beyond the regular season. However, he would fill a huge need for the Red Sox without forcing them to spend too much.
Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, Kyle Harrison and Patrick Sandoval could all end up being left-handed options in the bullpen, given how crowded the starting rotation has become. Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello and Johan Oviedo all figure to be in the starting rotation, meaning there is only one spot up for grabs.
