Man United suddenly recall 21yo star from loan, Amorim could give important role now

Manchester United have taken a decisive step regarding the future of one of their most promising young midfielders.

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils have recalled Toby Collyer from his loan at West Bromwich Albion.

Collyer managed just 253 minutes of action across 12 appearances for the Championship outfit.

A frustrating run of injuries prevented the midfielder from ever gaining momentum, and he is now back at Carrington undergoing rehabilitation.

The 21-year-old suffered a muscle injury earlier this month, halting his progress at a crucial stage of the season.

Initially, the plan was for Collyer to spend only a short period recovering at United before returning to the Hawthorns.

However, the latest report confirms that his time at West Brom is now over for good.

The young midfielder is expected to be sidelined for around eight weeks as he continues his recovery.

Collyer has already played 13 times for the Red Devils, having made his debut under former manager Erik ten Hag.

With no European football on the calendar this season, United had originally felt a Championship loan would offer him valuable regular minutes.

At the time, the decision appeared logical and well-judged.

Circumstances have since shifted, with United struggling for balance and control in midfield.

Manuel Ugarte has yet to convince, leaving Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as the established pairing, with Kobbie Mainoo providing an alternative option.

Collyer is a natural holding midfielder, capable of recycling possession and driving the ball forward efficiently.

He also boasts outstanding athleticism and an impressive work rate, particularly when operating without the ball.

He has the traits to shine under manager Ruben Amorim but must focus on getting fully fit before refining his skills.
