Former Man United manager reveals the three players driving a quiet turnaround
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly singled out three current players for special praise, a rare endorsement that carries enormous weight at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, representing a modest revival after a disastrous start to the 2025–26 campaign.
Speaking to Press Box PR, Ferguson praised the three summer signings of Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
He said: “I think the appointment of the goalkeeper [Senne Lammens] has made a difference. He’s young at 23, he’s quick, a big lad, good feet and hands, and I think that helps. I think they have needed that player. United have always had inspirational players over the years. I think that has helped.
“The other two, [Bryan] Mbeumo and [Matheus] Cunha, they look as if they will contribute to the recovery of our form.”
Receiving individual praise from Ferguson remains an exceptional honour, and all three players will take immense confidence from the former manager’s words.
Lammens has brought a sense of calm and authority between the posts, qualities United have sorely lacked for nearly two years.
The Belgian international has registered just one clean sheet so far, yet his overall performances have been widely encouraging.
He has been vocal during set-pieces and shown ability to clear his line with authority.
He should also thank Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir who kept the bar painfully low.
Bryan Mbeumo has enjoyed a fast start to his life at Manchester, netting seven goals and recording one assist in 17 games.
The Cameroonian has now departed to join his national side for the Africa Cup of Nations and will be a significant miss.
He is unlikely to return before mid-January.
Matheus Cunha has injected much-needed swagger and personality into United’s frontline.
The Brazilian thrives on physical battles, demands the ball under pressure and plays with the confidence of someone who wants to decide matches.
With Mbeumo absent, Cunha’s responsibility within the side will only grow.
He has two goals to his name so far and will now be expected to raise his output in the final third.
