Mad times
December 1983 we ended up playing 9 games including this one played on the Thursday after we'd drew with Liverpool on the Monday.
Fair play to David 'Wally' Michael God bless him for getting a coach sorted. Not the easiest thing to do at such short notice 3 days before Christmas and without even knowing how many would be getting on it.
We needn't have worried. The thought of starting black eye Friday a day early obviously appealed to some unfamiliar faces who joined up with the usual suspects and off up to Scouseland we went full of good spirits and in some cases blood streams full of spirits.
Unfortunately the great fighting spirit the team had shown in holding the best team in the country to a 1-1 draw 3 days earlier was difficult to replicate when they were running on empty.
Ah well out of one cup at least we had the FA cup to look forward to and what great memories we made. A good draw and play up at Sheffield United before beating them in a replay, an incredible come back win up at Sunderland that has to be up there in my top 5 favourite away days/weekends, the madness of hammering the Hammers only to have our own dreams fade and die in the 6th round thanks in no small part to John Barnes.
Sadly we ended up getting relegated on the last day of a season, our small squad dead on their feet when all those cup games (including 4 against Notts County) seemed to have caught up with us and bloody Coventry winning thanks to a goal from one of our own players Mick the Lamppost Ferguson who was there on loan.
I was at them all. The Liverpool away game was a strange one. May be 50 Blues fans there? Got asked the time on our way out and got chased ???? Sunderland away was a horribly cold day. The North Sea was trying to get in the boozer before the game. Two late goals saw Blues win 2-1. The place smelt of coal and their fans were keen to let us have their spare change inside the ground. West Ham, we all know what happened at that game. Notts County....I drove to the first one but with another car load behind us. I managed to take us the wrong way on the motorway. No phones back then so it was hand signals from one car to another ???? Did we also play Middlesbrough at home in the cup that year? I can't remember playing Sheffield Utd though.
Did anyone else go to these games?
