Man United Women learn their Champions League path after knockout draw
Manchester United have impressed in their debut season in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
United rounded up their league-phase campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 at Juventus on Wednesday, to finish sixth in the standings and secure a play-off spot.
Man United have now discovered their play-off opponent and possible route to the final, following Thursday’s knockout phase draw.
Marc Skinner’s side have been drawn against Atletico Madrid, whom they beat 1-0 in the league phase.
The first leg will take place on February 12 at Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares, while the second leg will be held at the Progress with Unity Stadium in Leigh on February 19.
The winner of the tie will face Bayern Munich, who got a bye to the quarter-finals after finishing fourth in the league-phase.
If United progress, they will face either Paris FC, Real Madrid, or Barcelona in the semi-final.
United have to strengthen their squad in the winter transfer window if they are to go deeper in the competition.
The Red Devils’ lack of quality squad depth has proved costly in the Champions League and Women’s Super League, where they have slipped to fourth in the standings.
United now risk missing out on Champions League qualification via the league, unless the squad is strengthened to help them cope on both domestic and European fronts.
