Sports Briefs: Goodenough rallies Marin Academy girls soccer past Tam
Reese Goodenough scored a pair of goals as the Marin Academy girls soccer team rallied from an early deficit for a 3-1 victory against Tam on Thursday.
The Red-tailed Hawks (0-5-0) went ahead in the first 3 minutes but Goodenough scored twice as the Wildcats (4-0-0) took a 2-1 lead into the half. Goodenough’s first goal came off a corner taken by Tatum Colpitts and her second followed a free kick by Stephanie Zola.
Colpitts set up MA’s third goal, serving a dangerous ball into the box on a corner kick that took a deflection off a Tam player and went into the net.
- D’Angelica netted two goals, including a curling direct free kick taken from outside the 18-yard box, to lift San Marin to a 2-1 win against International on Wednesday night. Julia MacDonald assisted on the first goal for the Mustangs (5-0-1).
- Five different players had goals to lead San Rafael to a 5-0 win against Tennyson on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs (6-0-2) got goals from Jaela Brown, Stefani Brandt, Ryder Higgins Jones, Ashanti Solano, and Yasmin Lopez. Brown, Joselin Romero, and Darby Fones had assists.
Boys soccer
Reid Brandt scored twice in the final 20 minutes — once on a penalty kick and once on a free kick — as Terra Linda (1-3-0) rallied for a 2-1 win over San Rafael in the first game of the Mission City Invitational on Thursday.
Jefferson Martinez headed home a goal off a corner taken by Cal Stewart as San Rafael (3-2-1) took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Mission City Invitational continues with the first of three games starting at 3:30 p.m. Friday then six more games all day Saturday. Archie Williams plays on Friday. TL, Tam, and San Rafael all play Saturday.
Girls basketball
The Branson School got 13 points each from Kate Spaulding and Alyssa Huang as the undefeated Bulls beat Montgomery, 47-17, in Thursday’s first-round tournament action in Windsor. Juliette Caldwell-little added eight points for the Bulls (6-0), who got another seven points from Ava Gordon.
- San Marin edged Miramonte, 31-30, at the Windsor tournament on Thursday as the Mustangs improved to 5-1.
- MA girls traveled to International HS Thursday night and came an away with a 51-46 win. Navah Bailey attacked the paint to score a team-high 18 points as Marin Academy posted a 51-46 road win over International on Thursday. Lucy Robinson and Penelope Lee tallied 15 points each.
Boys basketball
San Domenico opened the Red Brown Tournament at Archie Williams High with a resounding 68-47 victory against Miramonte on Thursday.
The Panthers held the Matadors to just six points in the first half and led 39-18 at halftime en route to the win. Ika Jokhadze directed the offense and finished with seven points and 11 assists. Omar Williams, Oskar Valiauga and JP Magalhaes finished with 15 points apiece. San Domenico will take on Skyline on Friday at 4 p.m.
- Marin Catholic fought to a 66-57 victory past a tough Cornerstone Christian squad in Thursday’s first round of the Liberty Stonebarger Invitational as the Wildcats improved to 4-1. The Wildcats rallied for a 31-25 halftime lead before a back-and-forth second half. Junior Oliver Myers scored 11 points for the Wildcats, who got 10 points from sophomore Dom Hammond. Marin Catholic (4-1) plays Lincoln HS tomorrow at 8pm.
- San Marin opened up a modest halftime lead that the Mustangs rode to a 54-43 victory over Santa Rosa in the opening round of the Rose City Tournament, hosted by Cardinal Newman. The Mustangs are scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. against either Analy or Enochs.
- San Rafael rolled to a 48-33 victory over Napa n the opening round of the Rose City Tournament, hosted by Cardinal Newman. The Bulldogs (4-2) are scheduled to play Friday at 8 p.m. against either Cardinal Newman or Shasta.
