Chris Waddle sends Thomas Frank message to Tottenham fans after Postecoglou comparison

Tottenham Hotspur are still searching for genuine consistency under Thomas Frank, and one former player believes little has changed from the Ange Postecoglou era.

Tottenham are still undergoing a period of transition as they look to claw their way back to the top of English football.

Spurs won the Europa League last season, but it came in their worst-ever Premier League campaign, where they finished 17th after losing 22 games under Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian ensured that the football played under him was attacking and intense, with the famous Ange Ball term coined from his style.

However, that was not enough to keep results consistent, and it ultimately led to Postecoglou’s dismissal back in the summer.

Thomas Frank has since been tasked with bringing some stability to N17 and, in many ways, has proven to be different from his predecessor, as he looks more measured, disciplined and balanced.

Former Spurs winger Chris Waddle has now shared his view on Tottenham’s start to the season and argued that he has not seen a great deal of change under Frank, highlighting the ongoing inconsistency.

Waddle told WhichBookie: “Spurs have had a mixed start to the season and they remind me a bit of how they performed under Ange Postecoglou; one week they look outstanding and the next game they are like a totally different team.

“They are just as inconsistent as they were last season and if it was not for the Europa League win it would have been seen as a disaster.

“Thomas Frank has brought slightly more defensive and tactical discipline to the side, but they are still short of quality going forward. Xavi Simons has not quite hit the ground running since his move from RB Leipzig and he will get better with time, but it still feels like they are lacking threat.

“Simons will take time to adapt and you have to be patient. Fans think you can just turn the quality on at a press of a button – you cannot. He needs time to settle in and build his confidence. Scoring goals is a big problem for Spurs at the moment and that will not help his confidence.”

Indeed, it will take some time for things to come together for Frank, who continues to search for the right balance for this Tottenham side.

Results have not always been good, but many fans are interested in seeing Tottenham compete and not getting outplayed in games.

His overly cautious approach has been his biggest criticism, but the Dane looks to be adjusting, and that has brought about an uptick in form for Tottenham.

Simons is one of the greatest beneficiaries of a free flowing Tottenham, with the midfielder grabbing two goals in his last two games.

If Frank can find a way to balance defensive solidity with attacking thrust, then results will improve on the pitch and player output will improve too.
