Aston Villa team news as Youri Tielemans captains Unai Emery’s team in the Europa League
Manager Unai Emery has named his team for Aston Villa’s Europa League match against Young Boys this evening.
Villa are looking to make it four wins out of five Europa League fixtures against Swiss Super League opposition at Villa Park tonight. Young Boys are scoring for fun in domestic matches this season but undeniably leaky in Europe.
Emery has chosen to rest a number of players for the match, naming Youri Tielemans as his captain with both John McGinn and Ezri Konsa dropping to the bench.
Ollie Watkins is also rested, making way for Donyell Malen to start at centre-forward ahead of Morgan Rogers, Evann Guessand and Jadon Sancho.
Villa’s makeshift back four
Emery has chosen to leave Konsa, Matty Cash and Lucas Digne on the bench but start with Pau Torres, who plays in an unfamiliar back four.
Victor Lindelöf gets the nod at right-back with Ian Maatsen on the left, where he’ll be asked to link up with Sancho and the returning Amadou Onana in the Young Boys defensive third. Lamare Bogarde partners Torres in the middle.
Villa’s substitutes’ bench features everyone who’s dropped out of the starting eleven or was on the bench against Leeds United.
The three additions are goalkeeper Rhys Oakley, Andrés García on his return from injury and Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott, who has not featured in any of Villa’s last four matchday squads in the Premier League.
