Former Red Sox First Baseman Predicted To Sign With Rockies

Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury last season, leaving the Boston Red Sox to try many different players at first base to fill the void. Among the players the Red Sox deployed at first base was Nathaniel Lowe.

Lowe was designated for assignment and then non-tendered after the season ended, but the former Silver Slugger had a solid stint with the Red Sox. He was acquired by the Washington Nationals from the Texas Rangers before the season, but the Red added him after he was designated for assignment.

Lowe is once again a free agent, and with Triston Casas returning, the Red Sox do not need him. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted he would sign with the Colorado Rockies.

“After cutting ties with Michael Toglia, the Rockies look like a logical landing spot for a long list of the veteran first basemen on the market, which includes Rhys Hoskins, Nathaniel Lowe, Ty France and Josh Bell,” wrote Reuter on Monday.

Lowe was not playing great for the Nationals, but resurrected his season in Boston. He had a slash line of .216/.292/.373 in 119 games with the Nationals. For comparison, his slash line in four seasons with the Rangers was .272/.356/.433.

For the Red Sox, Lowe had a .790 OPS, 16 RBIs and two home runs in 34 games. He was a solid addition who could now help a needy team. He is a World Series champion, Silver Slugger and Gold Glover.

Lowe has plenty of experience and could be an inexpensive addition this offseason. The prize of the first base market this offseason is Pete Alonso, but Lowe should also be considered by teams that need help at first base.

Lowe is entering his eighth MLB season. The Rockies need help on offense, and Lowe could thrive in their hitter-friendly ballpark.
