Prosecutor Says Former Patriots Receiver Could Face 30 Years In Prison

A prosecutor said on Monday that former New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown could face up to 30 years in prison if Brown is convicted on charges of attempted murder.

Many attempted murder cases in Florida come with a maximum 15-year prison sentence, but Brown’s case is different because he was allegedly using a firearm. “Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Cruz said because Brown allegedly used a gun, he could face double that time behind bars because of a firearm sentencing enhancement,” ESPN reported on Monday. “The law also carries a potential 20-year minimum mandatory sentence upon conviction.”

Brown was extradited from Dubai last week in connection to an arrest warrant from June in Miami-Dade County. Brown has entered a not guilty plea and was released from jail last week on a $25,000 bond.

The charges against Brown stem from an accusation that he grabbed a gun from a security staffer after a May 16 celebrity boxing match in Miami and fired two shots at a man that Brown had been in a physical fight with earlier in the night.

Brown’s legal team said at a previous hearing that Brown used his own firearm in self-defense, and that the shots were not fired at anyone.

No trial date has been established.

Brown, 37, last played in the NFL in 2021 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers alongside Tom Brady, with whom he won a Super Bowl that season. Viewed as one of the league’s top receivers for much of his 12-year career, Brown spent most of his playing days with the Pittsburgh Steelers but also spent one season with Brady’s Patriots.
