From Carrington: The rising academy stars who could depart Man United this winter

0 24

Manchester United could utilise the upcoming winter transfer window to make a few tweaks to their academy teams.

While sealing a blockbuster signing for the first team is tough in January, selling or loaning academy players is considered easier.

Here we look at the five stars from Carrington who could head through the exit door either permanently or on loan in two months.

Sam Mather

Sam Mather appears convinced that he has outgrown academy football and is ready to test himself at the senior level.

The 21-year-old had agreed to personal terms with Turkish outfit Kayserispor in the summer, only for the move to collapse as the window closed.

He was later linked with a move to the UAE Pro League, but that deal also fell through without progress.

United are now expected to prioritise a permanent sale in January to help Mather secure the fresh start his career desperately needs.

Sekou Kone

Kone looked on course to make his senior debut at the start of this campaign but a horrible head injury derailed his development.

After spending almost three months on the sidelines, Kone has now returned to action.

The 19-year-old is a phenomenal talent, but he now desperately needs consistent minutes to climb to the next level.

A short-term loan to the Championship or League One would offer him his first real taste of senior football in England and the platform for him to explode.

Gabriele Biancheri

The 19-year-old striker has been in sensational form this campaign, netting four goals and providing three assists in eight Premier League 2 games.

Biancheri was linked with a loan exit earlier this summer but United kept him at Carrington to monitor his development.

His progress has gone slightly unnoticed due to the rapid rise of Chido Obi, who has taken centre stage at the academy level.

Often pushed out wide to accommodate Obi as the number nine, Biancheri has still impressed with his work ethic and versatility.

Sending him on loan for the next six months looks to be a no-brainer.

Tyler Fredricson

Fredricson made his senior debut under Ruben Amorim last season.

His excellent performances at youth level earned him the prestigious Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year award for 2024–25.

The defender started against Grimsby Town and was brutally exposed by the fourth-division side.

Amorim took him off at the break and the 20-year-old has yet to feature in the matchday squad since then.

James Scanlon

Scanlon is primarily a left-winger who prefers to cut inside with his stronger right foot to create chances.

The 19-year-old has trained with the senior squad multiple times under Amorim, highlighting how highly he is rated.

He has racked up two assists in five Premier League 2 starts this season, showing glimpses of real creativity.

Despite his age, Scanlon has already made 19 senior appearances for Gibraltar and added another assist last week.

A short-term loan could serve as the perfect proving ground for the young playmaker.
