St Johnstone v Queen's Park - Match preview

SEAN CRIGHTON takes his box-office Queen’s Park side to Perth for the club’s first visit in more than 13 years.

Over the years matches between the sides have been rare – but Queen’s Park put up a strong showing against the league leaders in the most recent encounter back in September.

Just as they did when the teams met earlier this season, the Spiders enter this match on the back of a win.

In September, Saints’ visit followed a 2-1 win over Ross County, with a Josh Fowler double.

This time, it was another brace from J14, only this time it was Raith Rovers at home – our first home league win since January 4.

The win has certainly lifted spirits around the Spiders following a heavy loss in the Glasgow derby with Partick Thistle, marred by a season-ending injury to Charlie Fox.

Goalscorer Josh Fowler dedicated his goals to Charlie Fox last week

Fowler dedicated his strikes to his team-mate – but will he have more to pay homage to the defender at McDiarmid Park, just like he did the last time the sides met?

The Season so far...

Simo Valakari’s side leads the William Hill Championship by three points – aiming to bounce back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Early season form had them riding high but there have been a couple of draws and a loss to Arbroath in recent weeks – including a 2-2 away visit to East End Park, Dunfermline last week.

Saints were one of the pre-season favourites to be riding high in the diision and so it has transpired – led by talisman Josh McPake.

The former Spiders winger scored the vital goal that turned a dra into a win in injury time the last time the teams met in September – a performance that boosted the Queen’s park contingent, even if the result was no points and an extension of the winless home form.

Tyrece McDonnell

That though is at an end after last week’s victory and with the Spiders now eighth and seventh-placed Morton at ninth-placed Ross County this weekend, there’s a chance for Sean Crighton’s side to make moves away from their relegation rivals if they can match, or better the performance against the Perth side, and flip the result.

They know to their cost though, just how tough it will be.

Henry Fieldson is back after suspension for the visitors, with Charlie Fox, Michael Ruth and Niko Udjur all ouit.

Adama Sidibeh is a doubt for the hosts.
