NFL Insider Would Be ‘Surprised’ If Josh McDaniels Lands Giants Head Coaching Job
The New England Patriots are off to a 9-2 record, and much of their success is due to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
New England brought McDaniels on board this offseason for his third stint with the organization. He may be eyeing a head coaching position in the upcoming offseason.
The New York Giants decided to part ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday. Given the Patriots’ success this season, McDaniels has emerged as a potential candidate for the job. However, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer expressed that he would be quite surprised if McDaniels ended up in New York.
“I would be surprised if Josh winds up being the pick here, but maybe not shocked, because Josh still does check a lot of boxes,” Breer said Tuesday during “Arbella Early Edition”, via NBC Sports Boston’s Darren Hartwell.
“The thing is, you’re going to have to be able to really wrap your head around what happened in Vegas, what happened in Indy (when McDaniels turned down the Colts’ head coach job after initially accepting it) and what happened in Denver.”
McDaniels served as a head coach for four seasons, two each with the Broncos and the Raiders. His overall record stands at 20-33, which isn’t impressive. Given that he had opportunities for two different NFL teams without finding success, it’s likely he won’t be in the running for another head coaching position anytime soon.
One factor that could help McDaniels secure the Giants’ head coaching position is the success he’s experiencing with second-year quarterback Drake Maye. His ability to maximize a quarterback’s potential could be exactly what New York’s rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart needs to thrive.
