MLB Insider Links Alex Bregman To Top World Series Contender
The MLB offseason has only just begun, but a lot has already happened for the Boston Red Sox. Perhaps the most notable development was an expected one, as Alex Bregman opted out of his contract, meaning he will test the waters of free agency for the second straight year.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox last year, but after hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, he’s decided to return to free agency to see if he can earn a bigger contract this time around.
Boston is expected to have a decent shot at re-signing Bregman, but there will undoubtedly be some competition for his services. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, one of the teams that could be in the running for his services is the Philadelphia Phillies, who are looking to make upgrades to their lineup after another short playoff run.
“Maybe it’s Bregman,” Rosenthal said on “Starkville” regarding who the Phillies could target in free agency. “Put him at third base, trade Alec Bohm. It’s something they discussed last year, trading Alec Bohm.”
Led by former Red Sox general manager Dave Dombrowski, Philadelphia isn’t shy when it comes to spending in free agency. Bregman would be a clear upgrade over the team’s current third baseman, Alec Bohm, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make a push for the three-time All-Star.
Whether or not Boston’s front office can find a way to keep Bregman in town is arguably the biggest storyline of the offseason. With other big-name spenders like the Phillies lurking, though, accomplishing that goal could end up being more difficult than initially expected.
