No future under Amorim: Serie A giants plot January swoop for 24yo Man United outcast

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee faces an increasingly uncertain future at Old Trafford as he struggles for regular minutes under Ruben Amorim.

The Dutch striker has featured for just 82 minutes across four Premier League appearances this season, hardly the impact expected from a £36 million signing.

According to the Daily Mail, AS Roma are set to revive their interest in the Dutch international.

With his opportunities limited, the 24-year-old is believed to be open to a loan move in search of consistent game time and a chance to reignite his form.

Roma currently sit fourth in Serie A, just one point off the top, and could emerge as genuine title contenders if they strengthen their attacking options in January.

Zirkzee moved to Old Trafford from Bologna in the summer of 2024.

He featured 49 times but managed to score only seven goals and register two assists.

It was clear from his displays that he was struggling to adapt to the fiercer intensity of the English top flight.

United signed him as a direct competitor for Rasmus Hojlund but Zirkzee looked lost as a traditional number nine.

He is good at linking up play with his teammates but lacks the explosive pace and predatory instincts required at the highest level.

He put in better displays as a number 10 but the arrival of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha has pushed him further down the pecking order.

The lack of minutes has already cost him a place in the Netherlands national team, with coach Ronald Koeman opting to leave him out of recent squads.

Zirkzee now knows the next six months will be make-or-break for his career.

Regular football is absolutely essential if he wants to keep his dream of playing at the 2026 World Cup alive.
