Red Sox Given Positive Outlook On Alex Bregman’s Future
The Boston Red Sox could bring back Alex Bregman in free agency.
Bregman reportedly will opt out of his three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox. Although Bregman plans to test free agency, returning to Boston isn’t out of the question.
Ahead of free agency beginning on Thursday, ESPN’s MLB insider David Schoenfield named the Red Sox the best fit for Bregman.
“The Red Sox remain the best fit,” Schoenfield wrote in an article published on Monday. “He was an important veteran presence for Boston’s young position players, and he’s a right-handed bat in a lineup otherwise heavy in lefties (Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida).
“Bregman’s age presents some risk on a long-term deal, but although his speed metrics are sinking (17th percentile), he still has good range at third base and brought his OBP back up after it dropped to .315 in 2024.”
Bregman played well with the Red Sox and would remain a middle-of-the-order bat for Boston. The three-time All-Star likely would remain the Red Sox’s starting third baseman and would solidify the position for years to come.
The 31-year-old hit .273 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs in 114 games with Boston last season. However, he did hit better on the road than at Fenway Park, which was a bit of a surprise.
