Drake Maye’s Competition For MVP Includes One Guy Not Getting Enough Credit
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is a serious NFL MVP candidate (as serious as one can be through Week 9). Maye has a passer rating of 116.9 with 2,285 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions for the 7-2 Pats, who hold a three-way tie right now for the NFL’s best record (Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos).
And while Josh Allen is very much in the hunt to defend his MVP crown, don’t forget about Super Bowl LVI Champion and two-time Pro Bowler Matthew Stafford, who has the Los Angeles Rams at 6-2 and is having a stellar season at the ripe age of 37.
Stafford has been on a heater lately, and his 2025 totals sit at 21 touchdowns, two picks, 2,147 passing yards and a 113.2 passer rating.
Other players in the running alongside Maye for MVP include Seattle Seahawks’ Sam Darnold and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield. Also, you can never rule out Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, although he hasn’t been great lately, and the Chiefs have already lost four games.
If Maye stays healthy and the Patriots keep winning, he’ll be in the race until the very end. But a guy like Stafford is one to keep your eye on, because he’s highly motivated to capitalize on what’s becoming such a special season at this point in his career.
Stafford has seen pretty much everything there is to see in the NFL. He’s been on bad teams, great teams, and a lot in between, but one thing that has evaded him is an MVP trophy.
