Why Tottenham will find it near-impossible to sign top transfer target in January

0 3

Tottenham Hotspur want to invest in their front line in the January transfer window, but their top target may be a complete non-starter.

According to reports, Spurs had an offer for Antoine Semenyo rejected in the summer before the winger put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at Bournemouth.

It has been widely reported that Tottenham may make a move for the Cherries star in January, but they are not the only ones interested in the player.

According to reports, the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United are ready to challenge Spurs for Semenyo, with the winger’s form this season attracting a lot of interest.

The release clause details of Tottenham target Antoine Semenyo

A couple of weeks ago, it emerged that Semenyo has an undisclosed release clause in his contract, and that gave some Spurs fans hope that a deal may be possible.

Journalist Dean Jones has now revealed that he is hearing the clause may be around the £65m mark, but he explained that it does not kick in until next summer.

When asked about Semenyo’s future, Jones told TEAMtalk: “I don’t think he will leave in January because from my current understanding of the situation, the clause in his contract would not be live at that stage. I also don’t believe Bournemouth have any interest in allowing it to happen in that moment.

“The update out of Bournemouth remains that the player is satisfied with his status because of their strong start to the season, but of course, that does not mean he will not look to change things long-term.

“In terms of the figures around his clause, they are continuing to remain secretive around it, but I was told recently that it is in the mid-60s. So we will have to wait and see on that. It is unconfirmed at this stage and there also remains a lack of clarity around when the clause would even kick in, so the situation is going to linger for a while.”

What Bournemouth expect to happen with Semenyo’s future

Some sources have suggested that Bouremouth want £80m for the Spurs target, and Jones has now suggested that such a figure is a fair reflection of the player’s value.

Interestingly, he has revealed that Andoni Iraola’s side do not expect the winger to stay beyond the end of this season.

He added: “Even at Bournemouth, there is a realisation that beyond this season, keeping Semenyo is going to be extremely difficult. In terms of his true valuation, I’d say he’s worth anywhere between £70m-£100m.”
