Dodgers, Blue Jays Match Insane World Series Record With Historic Game 3

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes, especially in a sport with as many games as baseball.

In Game 3 of the 2018 World Series, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers squared off in an epic 18-inning game at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers won 3-2 on Max Muncy’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th, ending the longest game in World Series history after seven hours, 20 minutes and 561 pitches.

Seven years later, it happened again. There were some differences, of course, but also an eerie number of parallels.

In Game 3 of the 2025 World Series, Los Angeles battled a different AL East team — the Toronto Blue Jays — in another epic 18-inning game at Dodger Stadium, tying the record for longest game in Fall Classic history.

The Dodgers won this one on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th as well, prevailing 6-5 on Freddie Freeman’s second career World Series walk-off homer. The marathon lasted six hours and 39 minutes and saw a staggering 609 pitches.

In 2018, that was the only game Los Angeles won in the World Series. The Red Sox bounced back to win the next two games, taking the series in five games for their fourth championship in 15 years.

Time will tell how the rest of this Fall Classic plays out. The Dodgers lead 2-1 following Game 3 and have Shohei Ohtani on the mound for Game 4, putting them in a good position to win their second straight title.
