NFL Insider Can See Patriots Making Move Before Trade Deadline
The New England Patriots are sprinting toward the NFL’s trade deadline and looking more like a serious contender each week. Their hot streak could position the Patriots as an intriguing buyer.
Adam Schefter previewed New England’s deadline outlook on Monday’s “The Pat McAfee Show” following a decisive Week 8 win over the Cleveland Browns. The ESPN insider called the Patriots a “very interesting” team to monitor, comparing them to the Washington Commanders last year.
A strong start behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels prompted Washington to acquire star cornerback Marshon Lattimore before the deadline, and the upgrade helped the Commanders reach the NFC Championship Game. Schefter anticipates the Patriots seeking their own splash before the Nov. 4 deadline.
“I could see the Patriots making a move here,” Schefter said. “Whether it’s for a defensive back, whether it’s for another running back for a little bit of running back depth. Whether it’s for another wide receiver, although those wide receivers are playing really well right now.
“I can see New England saying, ‘Hey, we’re in this great spot right now. We got a chance to beat Buffalo for the division. We got a chance to host a home playoff game.’ … I wouldn’t be surprised if New England made a move here before the deadline.”
The Patriots improved to 6-2 following their fifth straight win, maintaining a narrow lead over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East. Drake Maye is playing MVP-caliber football for the league’s No. 10 offense.
Schefter didn’t mention pass rushers, but multiple sources have identified that as a potential area of interest. The Patriots are reportedly more focused on defense than offense, which could especially be the case after an encouraging Week 8 showing from rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson.
The Patriots will play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 before the trade deadline.
