Myles Garrett Sets NFL Record In Five-Sack Loss Against Patriots
Myles Garrett was a lone bright spot for the Cleveland Browns during Sunday’s 32-13 loss to the New England Patriots.
New England cruised to its fifth straight victory behind another superb performance from Drake Maye, but Garrett did everything in his power to slow down New England’s offense. Cleveland’s superstar edge rusher set a single-season franchise record with five sacks at Gillette Stadium.
Garrett reached another NFL milestone after his first sack, passing Reggie White with the most career sacks before turning 30. He entered Sunday’s game a half sack behind the Hall of Famer’s 108.
Garrett also moved from 33rd to 27th on the NFL’s all-time official sacks leaderboard. He jumped ahead of Khalil Mack and T.J. Watt for fourth among active players behind Von Miller (133.5), Cameron Jordan (124) and Calais Campbell (113).
The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year entered Sunday with five sacks this season. He now ties Brian Burns for the NFL lead after securing his eighth consecutive season with a double-digit tally.
With nine games remaining, Garrett could pursue his career high of 16 from 2021 while seeking his fifth first-team All-Pro nod. Yet his dominance has done little to help the Browns, who fell to 2-6 following Sunday’s blowout loss.
Garrett tormented Maye, but the second-year quarterback still completed 18 of 24 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. New England’s struggling ground game also produced 179 rushing yards behind a career-high 77 from TreVeyon Henderson on just 10 carries.
The Browns may continue to waste peak production from their future Hall of Fame defender, who signed a four-year, $160 million extension in March after requesting a trade. Garrett and the Browns will recharge during a Week 9 bye, while the Patriots will host the Atlanta Falcons.
