NFL Rumors: Former Patriots Player Candidate For Record-Setting Trade
A veteran wide receiver may be on the move … again.
Brandin Cooks has played for five NFL teams, notching one of his six career 1,000-yard campaigns with the New England Patriots in 2017. He’s back on the New Orleans Saints, where the former first-round pick began his career before getting traded to New England.
Hopefully Cooks didn’t get too comfortable back in the Big Easy. Cooks is a candidate to get traded before the NFL’s Nov. 4 deadline, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
That would mark a record-breaking fifth time Cooks has been traded throughout his career.
New England sparked the first deal when sending a first and third-round pick to New Orleans for Cooks before the 2017 NFL Draft. The Saints used the latter selection on Trey Hendrickson, who developed into an All-Pro pass rusher for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Cooks lasted one season in New England before getting sent to the Los Angeles Rams. The Patriots recouped a first-round pick that they used on offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn.
The Rams traded Cooks to the Houston Texans in 2020, and he stayed there for three seasons before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys. He finally made his own decision to change teams when signing a two-year deal with the Saints in March.
Cooks has caught 14 of just 18 targets for 127 yards this season. A contender could pursue the 32-year-old, but two of his teammates will likely draw more interest.
Schefter also reported that the Saints are fielding calls for Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Although the Saints have informed teams that those wide receivers aren’t available, sources told Schefter that the NFC team may move Shaheed if they’re offered a third-round pick.
