NFL Trade Rumors: Patriots Prioritizing Defensive Help Before Deadline

The New England Patriots have emerged as a clear contender that can seek upgrades before the NFL trade deadline. A team reporter provided clarity on where New England will pursue help.

The Athletic’s Chad Graff reported Thursday morning that the Patriots have made more calls about defensive players than offensive talent. According to Graff, the Patriots are “pleased” with their wide receivers and running backs.

Although they could pursue more backfield depth alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, that reportedly won’t be New England’s top priority.

“As the deadline nears, look for the Patriots to consider adding more help on defense, specifically looking for outside linebackers who can provide depth as pass rushers on the edge,” Graff wrote.

Graff identified Jaelan Phillips, Dre Phillips, Dre’Mont Jones and Arden Key as potential edge-rushing targets. Additionally, Graff mentioned Tennessee Titans cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis as a trade candidate.

The Patriots reporter still didn’t dismiss a skill-position acquisition in the next two weeks. Graff floated running backs Breece Hall and Jerome Ford, star wide receiver A.J. Brown and a Jakobi Meyers reunion.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini also reported over the weekend that the Patriots are inquiring about available pass rushers rather than running backs. Harold Landry III, K’Lavon Chaisson and Milton Williams have accounted for 13.5 of the team’s 18 sacks this season.

Observers may have expected a more concerted effort to improve a ground game averaging 3.7 yards per carry through seven games. Perhaps Stevenson quelled some concerns by amassing 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in last Sunday’s 31-13 win over Tennessee.
