Why Former NFL Star Thinks Patriots Aren’t Overusing Drake Maye

The New England Patriots are currently at the top of the AFC East, and quarterback Drake Maye deserves much of the credit for their success.

Maye has led the offense throughout seven games, throwing for 1,744 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, some people believe that New England’s offense is becoming overly dependent on Maye.

Former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Mark Schlereth, now a current NFL analyst, doesn’t believe the Patriots are depending heavily on Maye.

“Are they in first place and 5-2 and should have probably won the two games they lost early in the season? Yeah,” Schlereth said on Tuesday during “WEEI Afternoons”. “So no, Drake Maye has been that good. He’s been that legit.”

The Patriots are only one season past their four-win campaign, and didn’t address all their issues during the offseason. Maye’s impressive performance is hiding some of the team’s shortcomings.

According to FanDuel, Maye currently holds the third-shortest odds for the NFL MVP at +700, just behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Not many criticize the Chiefs and Bills for relying too heavily on Mahomes and Allen. Maye’s improved performance this season should earn him the same respect among the league’s greats.
