Matty Cash ‘delighted’ for resurgent Aston Villa teammate after disappointing Premier League start
Aston Villa defender Matty Cash never had any doubt that a struggling teammate would return to form in the Premier League.
Cash picked up the Man of the Match award after Villa’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and produced the pass of the season to help set up the winning goal for Emi Buendía.
The Poland right-back has been a solid performer in the early part of the 2025/26 season and crowned his fine start with an impressive display in front of the two sets of fans who love him most at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While Cash has been steady for most of Villa’s matches this season, Sunday’s first goalscorer for Unai Emery’s side has been battling with a loss of form.
Morgan Rogers started the season playing well beneath his best and has taken longer to recover than his teammates. Positive displays for England and a maiden international goal helped to point him in the right direction and he scored a beauty to equalise for Villa in the Premier League in north London.
Cash was certain the best of Rogers wasn’t far away.
“I am delighted for him,” said the right-back. “He has shown that class is permanent. He needs to keep building and doing it because he is obviously a great player.”
Rogers joined Villa in January 2024 and had an instant impact that carried through last season, during which his 18 goal contributions in the Premier League made him the outstanding candidate as the PFA Young Player of the Year.
A timely reminder from a man in form
“In tough moments you need the help and support of the fans and sometimes, at all clubs, you take some criticism,” said Cash.
“When you are a young player – and he is still young – who has only had a season and a bit here, it is tough. When things go tough, it can affect you. He is a human being. We all are. When things aren’t going well, it ain’t easy.
“Sometimes players read criticism, it is part of life. We are the ones who need to turn it around and perform. So yeah, I am happy for him.”
Cash, Rogers and Villa will be in action again as soon as Thursday evening, when they take on Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer in the Europa League looking to continue their perfect start in the league phase.
Villa beat Bologna at home and Feyenoord away without conceding a goal in their first two matches. Those results helped the team get their season on track and put them in the top eight in the colossal Europa League monotable, which is Emery’s stated aim in Europe between September and January.
