"Incredible": Alan Shearer praises 2 Man Utd stars, duo make PL Team of the Week with Amorim
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has picked two Manchester United stars in his Premier League Team of the Week.
The Red Devils secured back-to-back league wins after an impressive 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
United made the perfect start with Bryan Mbeumo scoring after just 62 seconds from a lovely Amad Diallo assist.
The club could have easily scored more goals during the opening half.
Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot squandered big chances to double the lead.
Cody Gakpo equalised for the hosts in the 78th minute, but United had the last laugh after Harry Maguire’s late winner.
Shearer has now picked Fernandes and Maguire in his Premier League Team of the Week alongside manager Ruben Amorim.
The legendary striker said that Fernandes produced a real captain’s performance and delivered an ‘incredible’ ball for Maguire’s winner.
He said: “A real captain’s performance. He never stopped working in the middle, and who else would you have expected to supply such an incredible ball for Maguire’s winner?”
On Maguire, Shearer added: “The big man came up with another big goal in a huge performance. An absolute giant in both boxes.
“Defended superbly to keep Liverpool’s attack at bay and then produced a towering header to seal a memorable win at Anfield.”
Shearer also hailed Amorim for masterminding a sublime win against the reigning English champions.
United had not won at Anfield in more than nine years, but they ended the long streak with a superb performance last weekend.
In the process, the Red Devils picked up back-to-back league wins under the Portuguese for the first time.
On Amorim, Shearer added: “Masterminded an outstanding win at the home of the champions to complete back-to-back wins for the first time since he took charge at Man Utd.”
The Red Devils have climbed to ninth in the table after winning the north-west derby. The onus is now on prolonging the winning run.
United host Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Seagulls have been a bogey club over the past few seasons.
Brighton have won four of the previous five meetings, and United must produce a strong showing to beat the South Coast outfit.
