Ruben Amorim achieves feat no other Man Utd manager has managed with Liverpool win
Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, ending their nine-year wait without a victory at Anfield.
The victory marked United’s first back-to-back league wins under manager Ruben Amorim and also helped the Portuguese tactician equal a rare Premier League record.
According to OptaJoe, he has become just the third manager to win both of his first two away games at reigning champions, after Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte
He had previously guided United to a 2-1 win at the 2023/24 champions, Manchester City, last season.
Amorim began the season under pressure as United equalled their worst-ever start to the league campaign, collecting just four points from four games.
However, he appears to have turned the tide, as United are now playing better, and the victory at Anfield underscores that.
He got his starting XI spot on, and that was evident from the outset as United opened the scoring through Bryan Mbeumo, who earned 9/10 in our player ratings.
The Mancunian giants were the better side in the first half, and should have been at least 2-0 up at the interval – further evidence of Amorim’s brilliant team selection.
Bringing on striker Benjamin Sesko was another laudable decision, as the Slovenian helped United relieve the pressure and stretch play with his presence between the Liverpool centre-backs.
Amorim must now ensure that United build on the momentum, heading to their next league game against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
United lost both league games against the Seagulls last season, but the victory gained from Sunday’s massive win at Liverpool should give them the confidence to get a victory over Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
