96% Passing Success, 4 Recoveries: £46m Man United man earns 'perfect' praise from Amorim after Liverpool thriller

Manchester United stunned Liverpool by winning 2-1 at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

Bryan Mbeumo put Man United 1-0 up in the second minute, finishing clinically after a clever assist from Amad Diallo.

Liverpool hit back after the break through Cody Gakpo, but Harry Maguire rose like a warrior to meet Bruno Fernandes’ pinpoint cross to register United’s first victory at Anfield since 2016.

While Maguire and Mbeumo naturally grabbed the headlines, manager Ruben Amorim reserved special praise for the outstanding Amad Diallo.

Amorim said after the game (via ManUtd.com): “Amad is doing so well in that position. He’s perfect for that position. He was upset today when I made a sub, but he was on a yellow card, it was a lot of man-to-man on the side, so it was just about that.

“If not, he would continue with the game because he is so important for us. He has struggled for a few weeks [with his bereavement], but we are here for him and that’s the most important thing.”

Amad Diallo delivers his best performance of the season

The Ivorian produced his most complete performance of the campaign after a quiet start that had seen him go six league matches without a goal or assist.

Amorim could easily have opted for Noussair Mazraoui at right wing-back to tighten up the defence.

However, the head coach showed courage in naming him in the starting XI and was richly rewarded for his bold decision.

Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo struck up a lethal partnership down the right flank, constantly tormenting Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez with their pace and link-up play.

Diallo was remarkably efficient in possession, completing 22 of his 23 passes and registering four ball recoveries.

He also played two key passes, including a sensational outside-of-the-boot pass that sliced open Liverpool’s defence and set up Mbeumo’s early strike.

He lost four duels but was not dribbled past even once.

The £46 million-rated superstar bagged one goal and one assist in his nation’s 3-0 win over Kenya earlier this week and that performance certainly boosted his confidence.

Referee Michael Oliver showed him a harsh yellow card, which forced Amorim to substitute him.

The youngster was visibly perplexed by his decision, but the manager had to take him off as a precaution.

United would likely have lost the game if they were made to play with a man down.

Amorim will hope that Diallo continues this form against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend.
