Report: Patriots’ Week 7 Opponent Plans To ‘Simplify’ Offense
The Tennessee Titans may go back to the drawing board before hosting the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Tennessee ranked last in total offense amid a 1-5 start before firing head coach Brian Callahan earlier this week. Interim head coach Mike McCoy will take charge against Mike Vrabel and the Patriots in Week 7.
Cam Ward won’t run the same offense that’s struggled thus far. The Titans plan to “simplify” their offense for the rookie quarterback, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Drafted with the No. 1 pick after a 3-14 season, Ward has stumbled to start his NFL career. The former Miami star has the worst completion percentage (55.0) and QBR (25.1) among all starting quarterbacks, amassing just 1,100 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Ward also has four interceptions and four fumbles, so McCoy is focused on fixing the 23-year-old’s turnover woes.
“That’s one thing we have to clean up,” McCoy said earlier this week, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “You see what happened the other day in the game where there was some drifting and then the ball security in the pocket, things like that we got to clean up, and that’s our job as coaches.”
The offense’s issues aren’t all on Ward, who has already taken 25 sacks. No other quarterback has gotten sacked 20 times through six weeks. The ground game is averaging a pedestrian 3.9 yards per carry.
Ward also won’t have his top wide receiver on Sunday. The Titans ruled out Calvin Ridley due to a hamstring injury, giving the neophyte a depleted pass-catching group against New England.
The Week 7 game starts at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
