Amorim makes January transfer decision on unhappy Man United duo

0 5

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made his stance clear ahead of the January transfer window.

The futures of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have come under the spotlight in recent weeks, with both players struggling for regular minutes under the Portuguese boss.

Reports have linked the pair with potential moves, either temporary or permanent, when the window reopens in January.

United head coach Ruben Amorim was quizzed about their possible departures.

He said (via ManUtd.com): “That is normal, and I also know that in our club, everything is a lot of noise, and you have to have news, and players are not playing.

“They want to play. Like you said, there’s a World Cup. There are agents that listen to the players talking all the time.

“So, I understand that, but they are our players, and we need everyone to have a good season.”

Man United duo likely to stay at the club

Zirkzee has played merely 82 minutes across four games.

Benjamin Sesko is the new first-choice number nine, with Mason Mount having done well in the same role at the start of the campaign.

Sesko has also found the net twice in four starts and has been extremely helpful to link up the play in the final third.

On the other hand, Mount has also looked in good form as a false nine.

He often drops deeper to allow the two number 10s to make overlapping runs forward.

Zirkzee failed to impress as a striker in his debut season but showed glimpses of his talent as a number 10.

He aspires to play at the 2026 World Cup but will have to wait for his chances at United for now.

Mainoo is one of the best talents the United academy has produced over the last few years.

The 20-year-old played a crucial role for the Red Devils and England over the past 12-18 months.

Amorim has yet to start him in the Premier League as he wants Mainoo to fight with club captain Bruno Fernandes for the number eight role.

The best solution would be to play Mainoo and Fernandes together, but Amorim believes the United academy graduate lacks the positional awareness to thrive as a holding midfielder.

There is no doubt that Mainoo loves the club, but he may be forced to submit another loan request in January if he does not get regular chances to play.

Competition for midfield spots in the England squad is heating up, with Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson among those in contention.

Jordan Henderson and Adam Wharton are also in the mix.

England manager Thomas Tuchel is well aware of Mainoo’s qualities, but he will only select players who are featuring regularly at club level.
