Prep football: Terra Linda takes down Healdsburg for first win

0 9

Santi Frias came up with big plays to end the second quarter and to start the third as the Terra Linda High football team picked up its first victory of the season, 39-19 at home against Healdsburg on Saturday.

“It feels amazing,” said Terra Linda quarterback Bo Jordan, who threw two of his four touchdown passes to Frias. “I’m glad that we could finally get our seniors a win. Just overall a huge win for us. Hopefully this can help turn our season around.”

If the Trojans (1-6, 1-2 Redwood Empire Mountain) finish the season on a high note, they may point back to Frias’ touchdowns before and after halftime as the key moments.

Healdsburg (0-7, 0-4) drove the length of the field to pull within 14-13 late in the second quarter and was set to get the ball again to start the third.

The Trojans got the ball back with about 90 seconds left before halftime, which proved to be more than enough time. Jordan completed a 29-yard pass to Andrew Marks then converted a third-and-8 with a 9-yard pass to Marks to set TL up at the 15-yard line. One play later, Jordan found Frias open in the end zone to put TL in front 21-13 with 46 seconds left.

“Each week Bo just keeps getting better and better,” Frias said. “It’s technically his fourth game but third league game so me and Bo really connect well. … I thought he played a hell of a game.”

Instead of potentially double dipping around halftime to take the lead, the Greyhounds found themselves needing to put together a drive to stay in the game to open the third quarter. Instead the Trojans forced a three-and-out and Healdsburg had to punt.

Frias fielded the punt around his own 30-yard line, worked his way just past midfield but found himself hemmed in along the left sideline. Frias then doubled back a few yards, cut back across the field – pausing for a moment to allow two of his blockers to get in front of him – then weaved his way through traffic down the right side of the field for an electric 70-yard touchdown to put TL up 27-13.

“I got my amazing blockers to block for me and I took it to one side,” Frias said. “I don’t really see the hole, right? So I kind of just whip it around, have an amazing block down the middle, turn it up, and just do my thing and take it to the house.”

TL has held second-half leads in multiple games this season only to see them slip away. The Trojans were determined not to let that happen again Saturday as Jake Rehfeldt ran for a 9-yard score on the next drive to make it 33-13.

The Trojans’ play on special teams boosted their chances of winning with Frias’ touchdown. The Greyhounds’ play on special teams had a negative effect on their odds of winning  when the Greyhounds were again forced to punt – presumably to Frias. Instead, the ball was snapped well past the punter, who fell on the ball at his own 19-yard line for a 31-yard loss, setting TL up with a short field.

Jordan capped his day with his fourth touchdown pass with a 14-yard pass to Frias for an insurmountable 39-13 lead. Jordan, a sophomore, finished 10-of-18 passing for 194 yards.

“We think (Jordan) has a lot of potential,” TL coach Joe Ayoob said. “He has a strong arm and, like a lot of our kids, is playing his second year of football. He’s just a kid who is learning a lot every time he goes out and he’s getting better every time he plays.”

Frias had fourth catches for 47 yards and two receiving touchdowns, his punt return score, plus an interception late in the fourth quarter. Damaree Byrd had two catches for 72 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Anthony Amato caught a 30-yard touchdown and had a key interception in the third quarter.

“Our players have done a great job of continuing to grind every day at practice and put forth the effort every day.” Ayoob said. “We’ve thought we were on the cusp of a few wins that we weren’t able to close out, so this was a nice relief for our team to get the monkey off our back. … To get that reward of a victory is something the kids need to validate that work.”

Arturo Gomez had seven tackles for a loss or no gain to lead TL’s defensive front.

Healdsburg was led by freshman quarterback Dylan Hayes, who stepped in for injured starter Frank Rea and threw for 194 yards. Receiver Hayden Mariani had 87 yards and three total touchdowns.
