'I feel': Man United star opens up on finding his best form under Amorim

0 2

Manchester United star Matthijs de Ligt has opened up after a strong start to his 2025-26 season.

De Ligt has been a mainstay in Ruben Amorim’s side, starting all seven Premier League matches and emerging as one of the team’s most consistent performers.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the 26-year-old admitted that he is entering the best phase of his career now.

He said: “I feel mentally and physically, really, really good. I’m now 26 and have been playing professional football for almost 10 years.

“I’ve a lot of, how do you say, history in my backpack. And I really feel that I’m now getting into my prime, my peak.

“Normally defenders peak around 30, 31, something like that. And I feel like I’m getting into there on a physical but also on a mental level.

“And that’s something that’s really interesting, especially as I play in the toughest league in the world, where I can test myself against the best players.

“I feel like I’m really getting into that peak form.”

Underrated De Ligt deserves higher appreciation

Despite United’s mixed start, De Ligt has quietly been a pillar of stability.

The Netherlands international has played the full 90 minutes in all seven league games.

De Ligt has looked absolutely secure with the ball at his feet as he has not been dispossessed even once in the league.

He has also made 23 recoveries, 15 tackles and won over 60% of his duels.

Harry Maguire finished last season on a high and looked slightly ahead of De Ligt in the pecking order.

However, United head coach Ruben Amorim was quick to realise that the Dutchman looked sharp in pre-season and backed him for a starting role.

Club icon Rio Ferdinand described De Ligt as ‘magnificent‘ and told Amorim that he should be the first name on the team sheet.

The former Bayern Munich star has been in the spotlight since he was a teenager, captaining Ajax in the Champions League.

He has won trophies for every club he has played for and is now determined to extend that winning habit at Old Trafford.

He used the 2024-25 season to acclimatise himself to the Premier League and now looks a bedrock at the back through his proactive defending.

Amorim will be counting on his in-form defender to marshal the backline at Anfield tomorrow as United look to keep Liverpool at bay in one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
