Craig Breslow Identifies Areas Of Need For Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox held their end-of-season press conference on Monday. Sam Kennedy, Craig Breslow and Alex Cora all spoke to the media following their loss to the New York Yankees in the Wild Card round.

The trio touched on many subjects, both retrospective and forward-looking. Breslow received several questions about offseason plans and didn’t provide too many insights as to what that would look like. He did, however, identify areas the Red Sox need to improve to make a deep run in October next season.

“We can talk about the different elements of the game and say that we have to examine our defense,” Breslow said. “We led the league in errors, and that’s not good enough. At the same time, I think that our outfield defense was the best in baseball.”

Trevor Story led the Red Sox with 19 errors, but his errors came in spurts. Alex Bregman also struggled at third early in the season before buckling down later on. In the outfield, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu were excellent, though Jarren Duran had issues at times. There isn’t one clear spot the Red Sox will look to upgrade, though the way they coach defense might come under the microscope.

The other area that the Red Sox need to improve is offensively, according to Breslow. He said the team ranked highly in many categories, but their strikeout rate with runners in scoring position was an issue. Down the stretch, that issue was very apparent as the team consistently failed to drive in runners.

Breslow also mentioned that adding a source of home runs to the lineup is something they’ll take into consideration. Home runs represent a significant portion of runs scored in the postseason, and the Red Sox lacked home run threats in 2025.

The Red Sox have already begun their offseason, though moves won’t be made until after the World Series finishes. Both Bregman and Story have opt-out clauses in their contracts that will need to be determined before then.
