Thomas Frank makes big Micky van de Ven reveal after Tottenham captain decision
Tottenham fans will be very interested in what Thomas Frank has said about his decision to hand Micky van de Ven the captain’s armband for the clash against Bodo/Glimt.
With Cristian Romero staying back in London as a precaution, many would have expected Pedro Porro or Guglielmo Vicario to be handed the captain’s armband.
Instead, it was Van de Ven who led the side out at the Aspmyra Stadion, and the Tottenham man delivered a captain’s performance.
It was a tough night for Spurs, whose defence came under a lot of pressure, particularly in the first-half.
Not only did the Dutchman showcase a calm head at the back, but he also got the crucial goal on 66 minutes, which brought the Lilywhites back into the game.
Thomas Frank has decided on Tottenham’s leadership group
Frank has been putting off his decision on identifying the leadership group at Tottenham, with the Spurs boss making it clear that he wants to know the players better before making the decision.
The 51-year-old has now confirmed that he has decided on his core leadership group, making it clear that Van de Ven is a key part of it.
When asked about his decision to make the Netherlands international captain and whether he has decided on the leadership group, Frank told Football.London: “Thank you for that. Yes, I have made a decision. I haven’t told the players yet, and that will be on Thursday.
“So I made the decision, but it’s probably pretty obvious he will be. He has impressed me a lot as a player, but also as a communicator on the pitch. And a little bit of show of character. I think he was good today.”
Micky van de Ven showed maturity in Cristian Romero’s absence
It was the kind of night in Norway where Tottenham could have certainly done with Romero’s experience and leadership.
However, Van de Ven was impressed with the way he stepped up, and the 24-year-old was not shy of shouting instructions to his teammates and organising the side.
With reports suggesting Tottenham are looking to tie down Van de Ven to a new contract, Frank’s decision to make him captain may also be a strategic one intended to make it clear to the defender that he is a central part of the project at N17.
