It's time: Amorim has to finally start 23-year-old vs Sunderland with United job on the line
Manchester United suffered their third Premier League defeat of the campaign against Brentford on the road.
The Red Devils conceded the opening goal in the eighth minute after poor decision-making from Harry Maguire.
Maguire failed to play the offside trap, which put Igor Thiago clear on goal to score.
Thiago doubled the advantage for the Bees in the 20th minute. He was aided by Altay Bayindir’s shot-stopping.
In his attempt to save Kevin Schade’s shot, Bayindir put the ball straight into Thiago’s path for an easy tap-in into the net.
Benjamin Sesko reduced the deficit for the Red Devils, but the Bees went on to win 3-1 after Mathias Jensen’s late strike.
Jensen’s long-range effort was straight down the middle. Bayindir should have made a better attempt.
The 27-year-old was caught out of position at the edge of his penalty box, and he should have backtracked quickly.
Bayindir made five saves against the Bees, but ultimately, he made a couple of errors, which contributed to the 3-1 defeat.
In our view, manager Ruben Amorim must finally start Senne Lammens over Bayindir in goal.
Lammens has arrived with a big reputation from Royal Antwerp. He prevented an xG of 15.4 goals in the Pro League last term.
The Belgian has terrific reflexes. He made four saves per game with a 77% success rate, but impressed with other attributes too.
He also completed 71% of his passes with almost eight long balls per outing.
In comparison, Bayindir has saved just 54% of shots against him this campaign, with a passing accuracy of only 60% thus far.
With Amorim’s job potentially on the line this weekend, it appears the right time for Lammens to make his maiden appearance.
After Sunderland, the Red Devils have a huge derby against Liverpool at Anfield after the second international break of the season.
Saturday appears an ideal time to hand Lammens his debut rather than putting him on the firing line straightaway against the Reds.
Amorim may not be in the dugout at Anfield if Sunderland were to beat United on Saturday.
