Aston Villa star at risk of a punishment because of social media post says former referees’ chief

0 2

Morgan Rogers could receive a punishment for a comment on social media after Aston Villa’s game against Sunderland, according to a former referee.

Villa drew with the Black Cats in Sunday’s Premier League match, during which the home team at the Stadium of Light were reduced to ten men by the sending off of Reinildo for kicking out at Villa right-back Matty Cash.

Later in the game, Sunderland’s Trai Hume put in a tackle on Rogers that passed without much comment on the day but was an extremely poor challenge and should, in truth, have resulted in a second red card of the match.

Sunderland chose to celebrate it by posting a video on their official Instagram with a caption indicating that Hume ‘got’ the ball, which he did. But the Laws of the Game make no direct allowance for that and it was a very dangerous challenge that should at the very least have been left to lie by Hume’s club.

Rogers reposted it, adding: “Great message to send out… dangerous tackle getting highlight reels.”

Is Rogers at risk of an FA charge?

He’s right, of course. It’s a stupid thing for Sunderland to post. But it’s been interpreted by some Villa supporters as showing a soft underbelly and former referees’ chief Keith Hackett, who used to referee in the Premier League, thinks there could be a sanction on the way.

“Morgan Rogers could find himself in trouble for posting this message,” Hackett said, inexplicably sharing his irrelevant view on the matter with Football Insider.

“It appears to me that the FA are monitoring social media and are taking action. The player should keep an eye on his post because he might be receiving a letter from the FA.”

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been widely criticised for his performance levels this season and has been playing beneath his level since the start of 2025/26 as well as struggling for his best form late last season.

Villa in general have been subpar and will have a chance to prove they have more in their locker when they take on Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday.
