No breakthrough as Man United Women and Arsenal battle to WSL stalemate
Manchester United Women were held to a goalless draw in the Women’s Super League at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday afternoon.
Less than a minute on the clock, Man United created the game’s first chance when Melvine Malard’s right-footed shot from inside the box was saved by goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
Shortly after, Jessica Park forced Van Domselaar to make another save, with a shot from the centre of the penalty area.
Arsenal’s record signing Olivia Smith came closest to scoring the opener, striking her effort against the crossbar in the 21st minute.
Just before the half-hour mark, Kim Little missed a great chance to give the visitors the lead, heading Katie McCabe’s cross off target.
Arsenal continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock before halftime. Alessia Russo had an effort saved by goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce while Smith and Caitlin Foord also squandered chances to score.
Five minutes after the break, Ella Toone picked out Malard, but the France international’s effort was blocked.
Just after the hour mark, Julia Zigiotti Olme fired an attempt wide after receiving a pass from Toone.
Arsenal’s first sight of goal in the second half arrived in the 68th minute, with Frida Maanum’s shot from outside the box drifting wide.
Chloe Kelly almost gave the Champions League holders the lead in the 79th minute, receiving a pass from Russo inside the box, but could not test Tullis-Joyce.
Deep into stoppage time, United got the game’s final chance as Toone fired a right-footed shot off target.
Despite making just one save, Tullis-Joyce was named player of the match.
Today’s result marked the third consecutive time that Arsenal held Man United to a draw at home.
Man United return to action next Sunday when they face Liverpool, who have not picked up a point since the start of the season.
